Welcome to our website - Il Giardino dei Semplici

Il Giardino dei Semplici is situated on the hills above Suvereto.

The name comes from a 16th century botanical garden in Florence, ‘The Garden of the Simples’, which specialised in ‘simple’ medicinal plants. Our company was established in 1993 in Liguria, but we moved to Suvereto when we fell in love with the landscape and the rich vegetation here.

As well as caring for olives, we cultivate medicinal and aromatic plants with particular attention to the varieties typical of the area and their characteristics.

We prepare extracts, liqueurs and teas in our traditionally restored ‘eco’ Tuscan farmhouse.

We have an agreement with the University of Pisa and organise courses on the recognition of botanical plants and their transformation, which takes place in our laboratory.

 We prepare some products in the Genoese tradition, such as rose syrup (Rosa Gallica Officinalis) - an infusion of petals which was given to children as a mild refreshing drink.  We also produce a ‘digestive’ using 24 macerated fresh herbs, which takes about ten months to prepare;

the lemon scented ‘cedrina’ liqueur ‘d’erba Luisa’

and myrtle liqueur.

Our Products

Our Products - Il Giardino dei Semplici

Herbal Digestive

We select 24 herbs with digestive properties from our plants, such as Centaurea minor (family Gentianaceae) which is similar to the better known Gentian and is traditionally used to produce elixirs and bitters.

The preparation requires about eight months to make, so that the optimum balsamic essence of each of the 24 plants is extracted.

It has a unique bitter taste, balanced and pleasing.

Erba Luisa Liqueur

Obtained by macerating the flowers of Lippia citriodora (Cedrina) in alcohol.    This plant, native to Chile, was introduced to Europe in the late 1700s.  It has an intense aroma with a flavour reminiscent of lemon, and has aromatic and digestive properties.  Best served cool.

Myrtle Liqueur

Liqueur made with berries and leaves of Myrtus communis L.   Known in Tuscany by the name of "Mortella", with digestive and antioxidant properties.

Rose syrup

Infusion of petals from Rosa gallica officinalis.

This is an old rose variety known from the thirteenth century for its fresh and intense scent. The syrup, diluted in water, is used for its soothing properties taken best as a refreshing and re-mineralising drink. It is used in cakes, ice cream, fruit salads and teas.Traditional Ligurean product.

 Herbal Teas

We produce four types of teas or ‘tisanes’:

 Evening Infusion

After Meal Infusion

Spring Infusion

Winter Infusion

We also prepare customised mixtures and packaging for restaurants and commercial outlets, depending on the availability of our herbs.

Aromatic Herbs

The following dried herbs are available for the use in the kitchen:

Laurel, marjoram, myrtle, mixed herbs (‘sapori’), nepitella, oregano, rosemary, savory, thyme, pepper and juniper
